AUSTIN — Brownwood Lady Lion Sydney Roberts finds herself in the top 10 heading into the second day of the UIL Class 4A girls golf state tournament, but has significant ground to make up in her quest for a state title.

Roberts, making her third straight state appearance, fired an opening round 84 at Onion Creek Golf Course Monday, which left her tied for 10th place along with Chelsy Tobin of Gatesville, Zoe Mayfield of Longview Spring Hill and Madee McAllister of Andrews.

Andrews’ Hailey Bergen — who defeated Roberts in a five-hole playoff that decided the runner-up from Region I-4A — posted an opening 72 and leads the nearest competitor, Lauren Cox from Little Cypress-Mauriceville, by four strokes heading into today’s final round.

Other golfers standing between Roberts and the top spot are Kalli Jennings of Andrews (77), Brooke Nolte of Melissa (78), defending state champion Shawnee Allen of La Vernia (78), Alexis Read of Bridgeport (78), Cassidy Rawls of Snyder (81), Bailey Blezinger of Bellville (82) and Hannah Walters of West Columbia (83).

Roberts finished fifth at the Class 3A state tournament in Bastrop a year ago with a 151 composite score following rounds of 75 and 86.

In the team standings, Andrews shot a 320 on Monday followed by Snyder with a 349 and Lampasas with a 354.
