AUSTIN — Brownwood Lady Lion junior Sydney Roberts improved by eight strokes in the second round of the UIL Class 4A girls golf state tournament Tuesday and finished in a tie for seventh place.

Following a first round 84 at Onion Creek Golf Course Monday, Roberts fired a closing 76 to post a 160 composite score — leaving her knotted with Regan Lindsey of Snyder.

Roberts finished 13 strokes behind two-time state champion Shawnee Allen of La Vernia, who erased a six-shot deficit by carding a closing 69 to finish with a 147 composite total — one stroke better than first-round leader Hailey Bergen of Andrews, who defeated Roberts in a playoff for second place at the Region I-4A tournament at Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock.

Roberts missed out on a state tournament berth by two strokes as a freshman, then finished fifth at state as a sophomore after winning the regional championship.

Golfers between Roberts and the state champion were Bergen (148), Lauren Cox of Little Cypress-Mauriceville (152), Kalli Jennings of Andrews (154), Brooke Nolte of Melissa (156) and Alexis Read of Bridgeport (158).

In the team results, Andrews cruised to the state crown with a 641 composite score followed by Snyder with a 693 and Lampasas with a 699.
