Lady Lions softball reaches double figures in wins before suffering first loss
GRANBURY — The Brownwood Lady Lions reached double figures in the win column before experiencing their first defeat of the season, finishing with a 3-1 record at the Granbury tournament.
After knocking off Chisholm Trail and Joshua Thursday, Brownwood returned to action Saturday morning with a 1-0 triumph over Saginaw Boswell. The Lady Lions’ fourth straight game against a Class 5A opponent resulted in a 1-0 victory for tournament host Granbury Saturday afternoon as Lady Pirates Alison Been tossed a no-hitter against Brownwood.
The lone run for Granbury crossed the plate in the top of the sixth inning as Rayli Ruby walked with two outs, then stole second base and third base and scored on an error — one of two miscues for the Lady Lions.
Brownwood pitcher Chyanne Ellett took the loss despite throwing her third no-hitter of the season with five walks and 16 strikeouts.
At the plate, Annie Gillispie and Ashlynn Patteson drew walks, while Ayanna Clemons and Landry Holden reached on errors.
In the victory over Boswell, the Lady Lions scratched across the game’s lone run in the top of the sixth inning.
Auzzlyn Benedict was hit by a pitch to begin the frame, while Holden was hit by a pitch with one out. With two outs, Benedict was able to score following a passed ball during the two-out at-bat of Yisel Mendoza.
The Lady Lions tallied just two hits — singles by Clemons and Annie-Klein Allgood. Gillispie and Patteson drew walks.
Ellett notched the win in the circle, tossing a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts and two walks. For the season, Ellett has fanned 144 batters and walked 18.
Brownwood (10-1-1) is slated to return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Robinson.
