HPU volleyball swept by McMurry in ASC finale

ABILENE — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets finished their American Southwest Conference volleyball schedule without a victory as they dropped a 25-16, 25-20, 25-17 decision to McMurry — their 16th straight defeat overall — in Tuesday night's league finale.

Mya Ross notched 11 kills to pace the Howard Payne attack followed by five each from Ciara Chappell and Shaylyn Wise, three from Amaya Marshall and one from Mitsue Rodriguez.

Kennedy Sam dished out 13 assists, Kaitlyn Elsten added 10 and Elizabeth Benn was credited with two.

Rodriguez and Hannah Rule both served two aces.

Defensively, Benn's 15 digs led the Lady Jackets trailed by nine from Ross, eight from Rule, three apiece from Sam, Elsten and Wise and one from Chappell.

Marshall registered three blocks, Rodriguez added two and Wise, Chappell and Felicity Rodriguez recorded one apiece.

McMurry (16-9, 6-8) received 11 kills and two blocks from Justin McGowan, 20 assists from Brynn Warnack, two aces each from Jordyn Burnell and Lauryn Davis, and 14 digs from Adile Leal. Alexis Garcia and Megan Martinez also chipped in two blocks apiece.

Howard Payne (2-24, 0-15) will conclude its season at 6 p.m. Thursday when it hosts Austin College at the Brownwood Coliseum.
