MARSHALL — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets remained tied for seventh place with UT-Tyler in the American Southwest Conference baseball standings — one game in front of both Hardin-Simmons and Louisiana College — thanks to Sunday’s 12-2 victory over East Texas Baptist in the finale of their three-game series.

Howard Payne (11-12, 8-10) scored three only runs during the first two games of the series and was blanked for the first three innings of Sunday’s finale. The Jackets then struck for four runs in the fourth, added a single run in the sixth and put the game out of reach with a seven-run seventh inning.

The Yellow Jackets pounded out 19 hits led by three each from John Elmore, Jake Sadler, Will Roberts and Colton Brown — who homered — along with two hits apiece by Matthew Daniel, Kyle Kulczyk and Dustin DeJohn. Joshua Martinez also chipped in a hit.

Brown and Sadler generated three RBIs each, Elmore and Martinez both drove in two runs and DeJohn added an RBI.

On the mound, Jacob Spivey worked six innings and yielded two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Ethan Ferrel pitched the final inning and surrendered a pair of hits with a strikeout.

For East Texas Baptist (7-18, 4-14), Wes Dorough collected three of the team’s seven hits and picked up an RBI, while Ashley Dukes started on the mound and surrendered four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk in a losing effort.

During HPU’s four-run fourth, Brown led off with a solo home run to left field. Daniel later walked and DeJohn followed with a one-out single ahead of Elmore’s RBI single up the middle. Sadler followed with a two-RBI double down the left field line to plate Elmore and DeJohn.

In the sixth inning, Elmore led off with a single and scored from third on an RBI ground out by Martinez for the second out of the frame.

HPU’s seventh-inning outburst began with a one-out single by Daniel followed by a base hit up the middle by Kulczyk. DeJohn then singled home Daniel and Elmore drove in Kulczyk with a base hit. DeJohn then scored on a wild pitch ahead of an RBI double by Sadler. With two outs, Martinez’s RBI infield single plated Sadler, while Brown’s two-run homer scored himself and Martinez.

The Yellow Jackets have five ASC series remaining and will return to action at 2 p.m. Friday when they host third-place LeTourneau (18-7, 12-6) in the first of three conference games. The series will conclude with a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader at Don Shepard Park.
