First-place Concordia breezes past Yellow Jackets, 15-0

The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets surrendered at least one run in seven of nine innings — including eight in the top of the eighth — en route to a 15-0 loss to the American Southwest Conference front-running Concordia Tornados Friday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

Defensively, the Yellow Jackets (12-17, 7-14) committed six errors while the offense mustered just five hits against Concordia (22-6, 16-2) pitchers Ragan Pope, Sean Mathews and Drew Van Winkle. Pope gave up four hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts and two walks to tally the victory.

Concordia generated 15 hits off the Howard Payne pitching combination of Shae Edmonds, Garret Virgin, Tyler Colburn and Chad Anders. Edmonds got the start and worked 6.1 innings, yielding five runs — three earned — on seven hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Offensively for the Tornados, Race Mellman tallied two hits and four RBIs, while Adam Ortega and Alex Steadman both finished with a pair of RBIs and one hit. Michael Evan chipped in two hits and drove in one.

For Howard Payne, Jake Sadler recorded two hits — including a triple — while Joshua Martinez, Dustin DeJohn and Cody Brown contributed singles.

Howard Payne would be the eighth and final seed in the ASC championship tournament if the season ended Friday. Ninth-place East Texas Baptist (14-13, 5-10) trails the Yellow Jackets by three games with eight contests remaining for HPU.
