Lady Jackets eliminated from postseason contention after two losses at No. 3 ETBU

MARSHALL — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets were mathematically eliminated from American Southwest Conference softball tournament contention Monday with a pair of losses at No. 3 East Texas Baptist, 10-0 and 3-0.

Howard Payne — which mustered just one hit over 12 innings — slipped to 10-26 overall and 6-22 in ASC action, five games behind sixth-place UT-Dallas (14-18, 10-16), which has three conference games remaining.

Meanwhile, ETBU (27-2, 23-2) increased its win streak to 13 games behind the arm of Shelby Parker.

In the 10-0, five-inning opening victory, Parker faced the minimum 12 batters through four innings, leaving with a perfect game and 10 strikeouts. Shelby Phillips worked the final inning and retired the side in order, collecting two more strikeouts as the Lady Jackets finished with 12 in 15 trips to the plate.

ETBU scored two runs in the third inning of the opener, then erupted for eight runs on seven hits and four errors in the bottom of the fourth.

Tayler Rushing was tagged with the loss for HPU as she surrendered 13 hits and 10 runs, but only five were earned.

Offensive standouts for ETBU included Lindsey Vasquez with three hits and two runs, Lacey Lindsey with two hits and three RBIs and Kaitlyn Hollingshead, Alexis Padilla and Maranda Westbrook with one hit and one RBI apiece.

In the nightcap, the Lady Jackets yielded single runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings.

Celese Tirres went the distance in the circle for HPU, allowing seven hits while striking out five and walking one.

Parker went the distance in second game for ETBU, striking out 14 and allowing only a single to Gaby Muniz to start the game.

Jayme Perez homered in ETBU’s first at-bat, while Mallory Westbrook finished with two hits and an RBI.

Howard Payne will conclude its season at 3 p.m. today with a single game against ETBU. The Lady Jackets will attempt to halt a five-game losing streak in their finale.
