Yellow Jackets pitch their way past SAGU, 3-1
Four Yellow Jacket pitchers combined to surrender just one run to the Southwestern Assemblies of God Lions in a 3-1 non-conference victory for Howard Payne Tuesday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.
Chad Anders, the second HPU pitcher of record, picked up the victory after tossing four innings of relief, allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Zach Moseley got the start and worked three scoreless innings, yielding three hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Dylan Hudson added an inning of relief, allowing just one hit. Adrian Acosta recorded the save, tossing a perfect ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts.
The Yellow Jackets finished with seven hits — three by Cliff Lunceford and one each by William Payne, Brandon Garrett, Matthew Daniel and Blake Laney. Garrett, Laney and Cody Brown recorded RBIs.
Howard Payne took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, but SAGU drew even in the top of the seventh. The Yellow Jackets surged in front, 2-1, in the bottom of the seventh and added an insurance run in the eighth.
HPU’s third-inning run scored when Brown reached on a two-out error that plated Garrett, who was hit by a pitch to begin the frame.
SAGU’s lone run was the result of a Jake Killon two-out RBI single in the seventh that brought home Tallon Ralstin.
The Yellow Jackets’ go-ahead run was driven in by a Laney single through the left side with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Daniel scored the second run after reaching on a one-out walk.
Howard Payne’s insurance run was produced by a Garret RBI sacrifice bunt, which plated Lunceford after he led off with a single.
The Yellow Jackets (5-3, 1-2) resume ASC action at 1 p.m. Friday when they host Mary Hardin-Baylor in the first of a three-game series at Don Shepard Park. Games 2 and 3 will follow beginning at noon Saturday.
