Lions, Lady Lions earn pair of consolation titles, finish third in two more draws at BHS tourney
The Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions combined for two consolation championships and a pair of third-place finishes in “A” division action to highlight their performance during the Brownwood Invitational Thursday.
One consolation crown was earned by the mixed doubles team of Zach Hall and Brittney Blake, who dropped their first match to the Eneli/Sieber duo from Harker Heights, 6-3, 7-5, but responded with two victories.
Hall and Blake took down the Guerrero/Star team from San Angelo Lake View, 6-0, 6-1, then knocked off the Dixon/Little duo from Ballinger, 6-0, 6-2, in the consolation championship match.
In girls singles action, Lady Lion Bailey Bishop captured the consolation championship with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Harker Heights’ Nellie Neal in a match that ended shortly after 10 p.m.
Bishop dropped her tournament opener, 6-4, 6-1, to Emma Holt of Harker Heights, but bounced back with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Sami Turner of Copperas Cove and later won by default to reach the consolation final.
Fellow Lady Lion Rachel Arrington, also in girls singles, added a bronze medal performance for Brownwood.
Arrington won her opening match, 6-4, 6-2, over Neal and collected a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Lake View’s Elisabeth Rowoldt in round two. Arrington then dropped a 0-6, 6-1, 12-10 decision to Killeen Shoemaker’s Marisa Richardson in the semifinals, and won the third-place match by default.
In boys doubles action, the tandem of Josh Dean and Jeremy Roberson came in third as well.
The duo knocked off the Killeen Shoemaker pair of Poe/Williams by a 6-4, 6-2 count followed by a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over the Glick/Johnson team from Copperas Cove. The Lions then suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to the Harker Heights duo of Fuertes/Rogers, but regrouped for a 6-0, 6-3 win over Lake View’s Allen/Kantocono team.
In other “A” action for Brownwood, the girls doubles team of Emma Sharpe and Kendra Renfroe won their first match, 6-3, 7-5, over the Gonzales/Johnson tandem from Copperas Cove, then fell to Adams/Caslavska of Harker Heights, 6-3, 6-3, and Bliss and Danmark of Copperas Cove, 6-4, 6-2, to place fourth.
Matthew Thompson, in boys singles competition, defeated Tristen Spencer from Lake View, 6-4, 6-0, in his first match, then fell to Maurice White of Killeen Shoemaker, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6, and William Conner of Killeen Shoemaker, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.
