R. Cheatham was a pioneer of Blackwood, Coleman County (just barely across the Brown county line). He had an exciting and interesting life. He went on several Indian chases, made eventful trips through West Texas, and helped arrest many frontier outlaws while he was a Texas Ranger from June 1874 to September, 1876.

EARLY — Early City Council members will consider approving a lowered tax rate and a $10.9 million budget for the 2022-23 fiscal year when they meet at noon Friday. City Administrator Tony Aaron said the proposed tax rate of $.36238 is 27 percent lower than the existing rate of $.4993.

A 48-year-old Early man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday in 35th Judicial District Court for the attempted kidnapping of a 4-yearold child from the Hobby Lobby store in September 2020. Judge Sam Moss sentenced Ronnie Jackson after finding him guilty in a bench trial of attempted aggravated kidnapping.
The start times for Friday’s Decatur at Brownwood football scrimmage have been moved up, with the JV and freshmen scrimmage starting at 5 p.m. and the varsity scheduled to start at 6 p.m. The scrimmage is scheduled for Gordon Wood Stadium.
