Two Howard Payne University alumni gave back to their alma mater this summer by sharing their passion for astronomy with several of the university’s youngest students. Brad and Joy Riza (classes of 1965 and ‘66 respectively) participated in the university’s Summer Scholars program in July for students entering fourth, fifth and sixth grades.
EARLY — The outdoor practice session was over, and members of the Early Longhorn Band briefly entered the high school’s band hall to tend to last-minute business before leaving for their next classes.

BELTON -- The Howard Payne volleyball team earned its first win for new head coach Josh Gerig with a 3-2 victory over Centenary in a season-opening event at Belton. The Lady Jackets won the decisive fifth set 16-14.
BANGS – Sawyer Wilkerson rushed for 273 yards and four touchdowns Friday night, leading the Class 3A Comanche Indians to a 42-18 nondistrict football win over the 2A Bangs Dragons. Wilkerson gained 214 of his yards and scored all four of his touchdowns during the first half.
DEAR ABBY: A year and a half ago, a newly married young couple moved into a house down the street. A few weeks after they moved in, my husband, my daughter and I went over with a gift to introduce ourselves and welcome them. They were super friendly. My husband told them if they needed anything to let us know. Shortly afterward, the husband contacted my husband and said since they were newly married, they couldn’t afford a lawn mower and asked if they could borrow ours. “Of course” was our answer.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Brownwood Independent School District (BISD) is supporting this cause once again this year by designating Friday, October 7, as “Pink-Out” day. Brownwood ISD faculty, staff, and students within the district will be wearing their 2022 pink-out shirts throughout the day and at the game Friday to increase awareness and raise money for local families currently fighting cancer.
The drought is taking its toll on white-tailed deer across much of Texas. According to Alan Cain, white-tailed deer program leader for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), hunters in two-thirds of the state can expect to see average or below-average antler quality, lighter body weights and a smaller white-tailed deer fawn crop.
